About the event

Join us for a three-day backcountry adventure through the breathtaking Cottonwood Lakes Loop. This high-altitude expedition takes you deep into the rugged landscapes of the Eastern Sierra, where alpine lakes, dramatic granite peaks, and crisp mountain air create the ultimate wilderness experience. Hike beneath the towering 14,032-foot Mount Langley, explore pristine lakes, and sleep under the stars in one of the most stunning high-country settings in California.


TRIP OVERVIEW
  • Location: Cottonwood Lakes Loop, Eastern Sierra

  • Total Distance: 16 miles round trip

  • Elevation Gain: 2,600 feet

  • Trip Rating: Hard – This route includes high-altitude hiking (above 10,000 feet), moderate to steep inclines, and some exposed sections. Participants should have previous hiking experience and be in good physical condition.


WHO SHOULD JOIN

This trip is perfect for:

  • Hikers with some backpacking experience

  • Those looking to explore alpine lakes and high-altitude terrain

  • Past students of our beginner backpacking course


ITINERARY
  • Day 1: Meet at the Cottonwood Lakes Trailhead and hike a short distance to a backcountry campsite for the first night. This allows time to acclimate to the high elevation, review gear, and go over trip logistics.

  • Day 2: Begin the trek toward Third Lake, passing through meadows, ridgelines, and pristine alpine scenery. Set up camp and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the high country.

  • Day 3: Continue along the loop, hiking toward Long Lake, a stunning alpine lake beneath the towering granite peaks. Spend the final night soaking in the beauty of the Sierra wilderness.

  • Day 4: Enjoy a sunrise hike before packing up and making our way back to the trailhead, concluding the adventure.

A pre-trip virtual Zoom session will be held to review trip logistics, answer questions, and assist with preparation.


REQUIRED GEAR & ESSENTIALS
  • Backpacking gear: backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, pillow, tent

  • Food for all meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner

  • At least 2 liters of water (water sources are limited on the island)

  • Hiking boots/shoes with good traction

  • Weather-appropriate layers, including warm clothing for cold nights

  • Headlamp or flashlight

  • Trekking poles

  • Personal prescription medications

  • Toiletries and rain gear

  • Sun protection: hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm

  • Utensils, mug, and snacks


GEAR & FOOD PACKAGES AVAILABLE
  • Gear Rental Package: Includes backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent, and bear canister.

  • Food Package: Three days’ worth of backpacking meals and snacks.

  • Campfire Safety

Safety is always our top priority. A signed liability waiver is required to attend this trip.


CANCELLATION POLICY
  • Full refund available up to two weeks before the trip.

  • No refunds within two weeks of departure, but tickets may be transferred to someone on the waitlist.

  • Trips run rain or shine; inclement weather does not mean automatic cancellation.


HEALTH & SAFETY

Participants are encouraged to be up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations. If experiencing flu-like symptoms or recent exposure to COVID-19, please do not attend.
